St Francis Bay is a destination all about following a road towards the ocean, taking a paddle through the canals, walking a section of coastline, or simply letting the afternoon decide where you end up. Sitting within this Eastern Cape holiday town, Bud & Bean adds another stop to the journey.

A canal cruise is perhaps the gentlest option. You get to see another side of the town’s distinctive white houses and waterfront lifestyle without needing to work particularly hard for it.
For something more energetic, hiring a SUP or kayak gives you the chance to explore under your own steam.
If walking is more your speed, the Two Harbours Walk follows the rocky coastline between the Heritage Eco Centre near Granny’s Pool and Port St Francis.
St Francis Tourism estimates the walk at around an hour, with the coastline offering opportunities to spot dolphins and, depending on the season, whales offshore.
It is precisely the kind of uncomplicated activity that suits St Francis Bay. Good shoes, some water and nowhere particularly urgent to be.
You cannot really tell the St Francis story without surfing getting involved somewhere.
The area’s waves became internationally famous through surf culture, and St Francis Tourism says the most consistent conditions generally occur between May and mid-September, although surf is possible throughout the year.
Surfing is only part of the water-sports menu.
Kitesurfing, surf skiing, paddling and SUP are all popular around the bay, canals and nearby Kromme River.
Even if your surfing skills begin and end with watching other people do it, there is something rather satisfying about finding a good viewpoint and seeing why this coastline became so famous.
Once you’ve finished walking, paddling or pretending you were definitely going to go surfing, food presents another way to explore the area.
St Francis Tourism actively promotes the Calamari Route, celebrating the area’s connection to the local chokka industry through food, activities, and educational experiences.
There are also restaurants, cafés and local markets spread through the town and around Port St Francis.
It turns a visit to Bud & Bean into something that doesn’t need to exist in isolation. You can make the club a one-stop day covering the canals, coastline, local food, and Cape St Francis.
The most interesting cannabis destinations aren’t always the biggest.
