From Cannabis Stops to Travel Routes: Route 420 Launches New App
After travelling more than 200,000 kilometres and visiting over 770 cannabis-related destinations across South Africa, the Rolling Stoner team has launched the first version of the Route 420 travel app.
But this is only the beginning.
Route 420 is being developed as a community-built travel platform designed to connect South Africa’s cannabis culture with the towns, attractions, businesses and experiences that surround it.
The app allows travellers to discover cannabis social clubs and Rolling Stoner Authenticated venues, and to explore nearby accommodation, restaurants, tourist attractions, cultural landmarks, and other interesting places.
Built From The Road
Route 420 grew from years spent travelling across South Africa and visiting cannabis-related destinations firsthand.
Along the way, one thing became clear: people seldom travel just to visit one venue.
They stop for food, stay overnight, explore towns, visit attractions, and support local businesses.
Route 420 was created to bring those experiences together, helping travellers look beyond a single cannabis destination and discover more of the surrounding area.
“Route 420 was always intended to be bigger than a directory of cannabis outlets. It is about using cannabis culture as a new doorway into South African tourism,” says Cameron Bramley, founder of Rolling Stoner and Route 420.
Now We Need The Community
The first version of Route 420 provides the foundation for what the platform could become.
Travellers, venue owners, tourism businesses, and local residents are invited to help build it by recommending destinations, identifying missing information, and sharing places they believe deserve to be discovered.
Through the app’s Smoke Signals feature, community members can suggest public places, natural attractions, cultural landmarks and other discoveries that fellow travellers may want to explore.
“We have travelled extensively and discovered hundreds of places, but we cannot build a national travel network alone. The people who live in these communities know their towns best. We want them to help us uncover places and stories that ordinary tourism platforms often miss,” says Bramley.
Community suggestions will form part of the platform’s continued growth, while Rolling Stoner Authenticated venues and Route 420 Travel Partners will remain distinct from ordinary map listings and user recommendations.
More Than Cannabis
Cannabis culture remains the thread connecting the Route 420 community, but tourism is at the heart of the journey.
The platform brings together a growing mix of destinations and experiences, including:

Route 420 is launching as a growing platform rather than a finished directory.
Destinations, information, and functionality will develop as the Rolling Stoner team travels and more community members contribute local knowledge.
That means the first version of Route 420 will not contain every destination, every story or every useful stop in South Africa.
