Route 420 Soft Launches South Africa’s 420-Friendly Travel App

Community Invited to Share Its Favourite Hidden Spots and Help Build the Country’s Map of “Smoke Signals”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

South Africa, August 2026: Route 420 has officially soft-launched its new interactive travel app, giving adults a new way to discover and share some of South Africa’s best-kept cannabis-friendly destinations, lifestyle venues and hidden local experiences.

Available through the Route 420 website, the app brings together more than 770 curated destinations from across the country. These include authenticated stores, social clubs, accommodation, restaurants, attractions, and other places that may interest travellers.

South Africa’s evolving 420-friendly landscape.

However, right now Route 420 is not only interested in the destinations that already appear on conventional maps.

We’re inviting the community to share the places that locals whisper about, return to and recommend to trusted friends.

Route 420 calls these places Smoke Signals.

What Is a Smoke Signal?

A Smoke Signal could be a quiet lookout point, a peaceful picnic spot, an unusual roadside attraction, a welcoming café, a scenic stretch of coastline or another memorable place worth adding to a South African journey.

“Some of the best travel experiences in South Africa are not promoted on billboards or listed in conventional tourism guides,” says Cameron, the traveller behind Route 420.

“They are the places someone tells you about at a petrol station, around a fire or while you are sitting in a local store. We call those places Smoke Signals, and we want the community to help us find them.”

Help Us Map South Africa’s Smoke Signals

When you submit a place, you’ll be asked to include:

  • The name or description of the location
  • Its town, province or approximate location
  • A short explanation of why it is worth visiting
  • Photographs
  • Any practical information visitors should know

The Route 420 team will review submissions before approved locations are added to the platform.

“We do not want this to become another map created entirely from behind a desk,” says Cameron.

“Route 420 should grow through the knowledge of the people who live in these towns, travel these roads and know where the worthwhile stops are hiding. Every Smoke Signal helps another traveller experience a part of South Africa they may never have found alone.”
